How we work
Many indigenous communities receive grants and aid from governments and non-governmental organizations, often these funds are limited to specific outcomes or scopes. Anne believed that indigenous peoples were best able to decide how to direct resources to greatly benefit their entire community. So this Foundation seeks to address gaps in services, whereby we fund projects that are outside the ability of larger players.

One such example is our work with the Estrella Einalii. This group of Anas Wayuu artists and crafters are entrepreneurs. Each has set up their own small enterprise to make quality goods. Our Foundation provided seed money for each artist to purchase raw supplies to make their goods.

Another example is our commitment to enabling indigenous leaders to participate in vital meetings and technical training to represent and serve their communities. Beginning in 2020, the Foundation has sponsored six indigenous individuals to attend the renown Expert Degree in Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights, and International Cooperation program at King Carlos III University in Madrid, Spain. The program gives participants valuable curricular training so they can undertake responsibilities and lead the design of local and national public policies, as well as causing an impact on the global processes of indigenous peoples rights' advocacy.

As an anthropologist, Anne fought for all peoples to be allowed to retain their culture, including their lands, their languages, and their customs, as much as possible, even in the face of progress and development.

The foundation will continue to insist on protecting the way of life of indigenous peoples in all our programs and to protect the lands, the rights, and the values of indigenous peoples.

Our Solutions
Indigenous peoples’ rights were not a concern when Anne started her work. The foundation will continue Anne’s work to establish indigenous rights over their cultural identity, their lands, their culture, and their independence.

What we do
The foundation will raise money to give to multi-lateral institutions to have as wide an impact as possible. Although our initial focus will be on large multi-national institutions now, we may be open to funding specific projects or programs to benefit select indigenous peoples. As the most vulnerable populations, indigenous peoples are the first ones affected by climate change, global warming, and deforestation.
Priority 1

Incentivize multi-lateral lending institutions

We will incentivize multi-lateral lending institutions to adhere to safe and sustainable development practices, taking into account the wishes and needs of indigenous peoples.

Priority 2

Sponsor internships

We will sponsor internships for indigenous individuals to work at large funding institutions, so that indigenous communities can have direct knowledge of how to apply for grants, represent themselves in international and national negotiations, and add to the knowledge base of indigenous communities.

Priority 3

Promote sustainability

Indigenous peoples live in the most sustainable way possible. We will tap their knowledge and provide means for indigenous leaders to attend major climate change conferences and regional environmental meetings to help solve global warming.

The foundation will ensure that indigenous peoples have access to local, state, and national power structures to ensure that their environment is protected, cared for, and sustained. The foundation will fund indigenous leaders to attend important environmental impact meetings, such as the Paris Accords. The foundation will interact with major organizations, such as the Organization of American States, the United Nations Development Program, and the Inter-American Development Bank to counter the effects of climate change, to reduce deforestation, and to improve access to potable water.
Where we're involved
The Anne Marie Deruyttere Indigenous Peoples Foundation is recognized as a public non-profit in both the United States of America and the Kingdom of Belgium. Donors from the United States and the European Union will receive maximum tax relief.
